HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. Wholesale Steelers Super Bowl LII Jerseys . -- Trainer Marcial Navarro has been suspended a total of 60 days and trainer Bruno Tessore for 10 days for medication violations, according to rulings issued by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation earlier this week. The rulings became effective as of Nov. 11.The rulings against Navarro, for 20 and 40 days apiece, were accompanied by fines totaling $7,500 and were for positive tests on two horses that raced this summer at Gulfstream Park -- Dave Hoeght, who finished second in the third race July 31, and Jaidens Best, who won the third race May 18. According to the ruling, Dave Hoeght tested positive for a combination of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatories flunixin and phenylbutazone. The ruling stated that Jaidens Best tested postive for clenbuterol, a bronchodilator that also has muscle-building qualities, and methocarbamol, a muscle relaxant.Tessores suspension, which was accompanied by a fine of $3,000, was for a positive test for methocarbamol from the horse Cowboys Princess, who won the first race July 21, the ruling said. Two horses trained by Navarro, Dave Hoeght and first-time starter Dancing Gia, were scratched out of races on Wednesdays program at Gulfstream Park West, and a third, Erichs Talisman, was scratched from Thursdays eighth event. ARLINGTON, Texas -- Toronto left-hander Francisco Liriano was cleared to fly home with his teammates after taking a line drive near the back of his head in the Blue Jays 5-3 victory over Texas on Friday in Game 2 of the AL Division Series.Liriano turned away from the hit by Carlos Gomez with one out in the eighth inning, and the ball ricocheted into right center off the back of his neck near his head. The hit was measured at 102 mph, and Gomez winced as he headed to first on the run-scoring single. The 32-year-old pitcher stayed on his feet and walked around the infield briefly before his teammates, a trainer and manager John Gibbons came out to check on him. Liriano was replaced by closer Robert Osuna, who pitched for the first time since leaving the AL wild-card game three days earlier with shoulder discomfort. An ambulance was waiting in the tunnel after the game to take Liriano to a hhospital, where he was checked and then cleared to return to Toronto on the team flight that evening. Apart from his irritating tendency to collide with the stumps in his delivery stride, Steven Finn had a good day. Wholesale Chiefs Jerseys . He flogged life from a decent batting surface and his three cheap wickets provided a basis for an England victory that has kept alive their hopes of a semi-final place. His potent pace bowling will encourage Englands hopes that beating Sri Lanka in their final match is not beyond them. But while Finn has a right to revel in his good day, his idiosyncrasy needs to be addressed before it causes an almighty row. The issue that first arose in the Headingley Test against South Africa shows no signs of abating. Instead of kicking the stumps, Finn needs to kick the habit. And, whether or not he kicks the habit, the Law needs to be changed.Finns tendency was regarded seriously enough to be brought up at the pre-tournament briefing for coaches and captains during which they were told that any bowler breaking the stumps would first receive a warning and on every further occasion the delivery would be ruled as a dead ball. As it happened the umpires forgot about the warning on this occasion.Finn collided with the stumps in each of his last three overs. As a dead ball was ruled, New Zealand missed out on a leg-side wide and then a single; on the final occasion, James Franklin drilled the ball through mid-off for four only for the boundary to be removed from the records. To add injury to insult, Finn struck him in the groin with his follow-up delivery. Considering how cricketers find nothing funnier, kicking the stumps over had every chance of becoming a euphemism. But Finns collisions are not funny, they are serious. Imagine what the outcome would be if Franklin had struck that boundary from the last ball of the match, thought he had won the game for New Zealand, only for dead ball to be ruled, the runs to be scrubbed and Finn to send the batsmans stumps flying with the next delivery. The solution is staring everybody in the face. It should not be a dead ball, it should be a no-ball. The batsman gets the benefit of the runs accrued and an extra ball as well. If batsmen stumble into the stumps in the process of playing a shot, they are given out hit wicket. For a bowler to suffer a no-ball is a far lesser punishment.Stuart Broad, Englands Twenty20 captain, said: The best solution to it is for Finny to stop doing it. Today New Zealand were unlucky but it might cost us an important wicket at this stage. But it is also important in a world tournament not to focus so much on that because he is in a nice rhythm and it would be dangerous to make him worry too much about that.Ross Taylor, New Zealands captain, was quick to praise Finns display, but that praise was tempered by his belief that the ICC approach is misguided. He wants cricket to introduce a version of footballs advantage law - allow the game to progress as normal unless a batsman is dismissed, in which case dead ball should be called retrospectively. For Finn to get two wickets up front put us on the back foot - when the ball was new was probably the easiest time to score, he said. But I disagree with the ICC rule when he breaks the stumps. It is a rule for one person in particular. Unless a batsman gets out you should just carry on.Taylor even suggested it cost New Zealand a wicket because Brendon McCullum was so angry with the dead-ball ruling that he got out. If he did, he was unprofessional, but it is a new one to add to the list of batsmens excuses. All this should not detract from Finns excellent display. He has hunted early wickets with aggression throughout the tournament and this time he was quickly rewarded, trapping Martin Guptill lbw with his third ball, fast and full. In his second over, when he reared one past Rob Nicols defences and over the stumps, there was enough venom in the delivery for it to fly through Craig Kieswetters gloves and strike him on the nose. McCullum, reportedly full of grievances and seeking to respond in kind, fell in the same over, slicing to third man as he tried to carve Finn over cover.Broad, a bowling captain with a refreshingly adventurous approach, gave him a third over with the new ball in the hope that he could make further inroads, but Kane Williamson and Nicol both collected boundaries. Instead, his final wicket came in the 17th over, the crucial wicket of Taylor, holing out at deep midwicket.Danny Briggs, who approaches the crease with the rhythmic grace of a gymnast, is the sort of bowler you imagine would never collide with the stumps. Instead, in his first appearance in the tournament, he collided with Franklin who took 16 from his last over to besmirch his figures, 1 for 36, by the end.Sunday would have been Briggs wedding day were it not for his appearance at the World Twenty20. Instead, he joined a reshaped England attack, part of a package that exchanged Tim Bresnan and himself for Samit Patel and Jade Dernbach. His left-arm slows have been employed for the first over twice this month, first against South Africa in a T20I at Edgbaston and now here, the first time a spinner has bowled the first over of the match in any form of cricket for England since Douglas Carr, a legbreak bowler, in 1909.The story of Carrs only Test is quite remarkable. His experimentation with the googly won him an England call up against Australia at The Oval, his new-fangled trick believed to be the route to victory. He took three wickets in no time but by the time he finished with seven wickets in the match he had conceded 282 runs.Briggs, a conventional slow left-armer, will be needed at Premadasa if England reach the last four and will find the longer boundaries more to his liking. He is a phlegmatic customer and during his spell spoke only once. Instead of his wedding vows, he exclaimed to himself when Franklins return drive spat through his hands to the boundary. Nobody was quite sure what he said but it was probably for the best that it was out of hearing of the vicar. Chiefs Jerseys Hoodies . LOS ANGELES -- Candace Parker watched video of herself in every game the Sparks played against Minnesota this season. Authentic Soccer Cameroon Jerseys .She didnt like what she saw.Parker brought a different mentality into Game 3 of the WNBA Finals, leading an aggressive charge from the opening tip in the Sparks 92-75 victory Friday night that put the franchise on the brink of its first championship since 2002.That was a product of me being non-existent in every game we played Minnesota this year, Parker said. She scored 24 points, Nneka Ogwumike added 21 and the Sparks took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series.Weve worked too hard to get to this point and just be there, Parker said. We had a game plan of just going to the basket and being aggressive. The Sparks can close out the Lynx with a victory in Game 4 on Sunday.Los Angeles built a 22-point advantage in the opening quarter when it shot 60 percent in the game played at Galen Center on the Southern California campus, down the street from their home court at Staples Center. Its all on the want to of Nneka Ogwumike and Candace Parker to start the game. Their want-to was on `10, Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said. Im not sure what we were expecting when we started the game but it wasnt that.Parker and Ogwumike were especially devastating in a 2 1/2-minute sequence in the first. They combined to score 12 straight points with Ogwumike hitting consecutive 3-pointers and Los Angeles taking a 21-6 lead.I didnt see it coming, a clearly peeved Reeve said. Lindsay Whalen added 11, and Maya Moore had nine points and seven rebounds. The Lynx had 13 turnovers.Theyre extremely good converting those turnovers into points, Moore said. If you give that much of a lead to a great team, its going to be really hard to come back. The Lynx cut the deficit to 48-40 at halftime, outscoring the Sparks 10-0 to end the second.Youre not going to sustain that, Sparks coach Brian Agler said about his teams initial intensity, but I also think a lot of that had to do with Minnesota. They experimented there for a while and finally got a group that was working. It didnt last long. With their former and current league MVPs leading the way, the Sparks dominated inside. John Inverarity has bowled me a doosra today with his comments about the doosra and integrity. Womens Japan Jerseys . Im genuinely not sure which way to play this one. That he is a gentleman and a scholar there can be no doubt. His reputation as man of decency and integrity allows him the privilege of making a comment such as this with some immunity from anyone looking to take cheap shots at him. From that perspective, reading his words carefully, I can draw no hint of mischief or hypocrisy in his brave statement. Perhaps a long bow could be drawn to infer that he is pointing fingers at some bowlers but I genuinely think that to do so would be to do the gentleman an injustice. Clearly he believes that the doosra has the potential to corrupt bowling actions and he would prefer to see the Australian bowling contingent shy away from that technique. Fair enough too if that is his genuine belief. On the other hand, I also believe that it may be a bit na?ve on the part of Australian cricket, if Inverarity is speaking on behalf of the institution rather than as an individual, to encourage a policy that is clearly going to disadvantage Australia to this extent. Put simply, the doosra is arguably the most potent bowling weapon in modern cricket. Especially in limited overs cricket, it is probably the single most influential factor in giving bowling teams a sniff of hope. The fast bowlers have proved woefully inadequate in coming up with anything new to stem the flow of boundaries. In fact, their skill level has actually dropped some considerable level, evidenced by the steady diet of full tosses that are served up at least once an over when under pressure. So the doosra and the variations that followed (carrom ball) can lay claim to being the most influential game-changer. When a bowler with a good doosra comes on to bowl, I immediately sit up and take notice because there is always the chance that a game can be turned on its head. Since Shane Warne led the new spin revolution, nothing has excited me more in the bowling stakes than the perfection of the various types of doosra. That is why I am slightly flummoxed by Inveraritys stance on it. Whilst not necessarily agreeing with his inference that it may lead to illegal actions, I respect his integrity enough to accept his point in the spirit it was intended. However, to encourage Australian spinners to not learn the art form is possibly putting principle before pragmatism. That in itself is admirable if it were applied universally but no country, least of all Australia, has ever applied this morality on a whole of cricket basis so what makes the doosra so special? Is Inverarity suggesting that Australian cricket should now make decisions on the basis of integrity or is the doosra singled out as the one issue where we apply the Integrity Test? If so, is it any coincidence that we dont really have anyone who can bowl the doosra with any great proficiency and will that change on the day we discover our own Doosra Doctor? All countries have their own inconsistencies to be ashamed of so Im not suggesting that Australia is alone in this regard. Far from it. Living in Australia, I just get to see a lot more of the local cricketing news so Im better qualified to make comment on Australian examples. A few examples spring to mind….lets think back to the times when we prepared turning tracks in the 1980s to beat the West Indies. A fair enough tactic too so long as theres no complaints if other teams prepare pitches to suit their strengths. Similarly, I recall a period during the late 1990s when Australian teams insisted on having their fielders word accepted when a low catch had been taken. That theory worked OK until Andy Bichel claimed a caught and bowled off Michael Vaughan in the 2002/03 Ashes series when replays showed it had clearly bounced in front of him. I know Bich quite well and he is as honest as they come so it was genuinely a case of him thinking it had carried when in fact it hadnt. Around that same period, Justin Langer refused to walk when caught by Brian Lara at slip, despite the Australian mantra that a fielders word was his bond. They come no more honourable than Lara in this regard so what happened to the principle? Like all matters of convenience, it is admirable but rarely works when it becomes an inconvenient truth. And that is the source of my confusion with linking the doosra to the question of integrity. Im not convinced that the integrity issue will stand the test of time if Australia accidentally discovers a home-grown exponent of this delivery. Likewise the issue of the switch-hit. Now that Dave Warner plays it as well as anyone, are we opposed to this too on integrity grounds? If Warner hadnt mastered the shot, would that too be something that we would not encourage because it perhaps bent the spirit of cricket?Only time will tell whether Inveraritys wisdom and guidance will be mirrored by those in the organisation with perhaps less integrity and more pragmatism in their veins. I suspect it will take more than one decent man to stop an irresistible force. His motives may be pure indeed but I suspect that this is one issue that will turn the other way! Wholesale Japan Jerseys . Cheap Japan Soccer Jerseys . PETERSBURG, Fla. http://www.cheapjapanjerseys.com/ . How great will be revealed in the next couple of days at the board of governors meeting in Pebble Beach, Calif. The year is 1950 and 12-year-old Johnny Gleeson has picked up an illustrated article about the finger-flicking Australian Test bowler Jack Iverson, dubbed the mystery spinner because Englands Ashes squad of that summer were bemused and puzzled by his bizarre spinning craft. To the Englishmen, Iverson was a veritable Mr Magic - a seeming offbreak turned from leg and what appeared to be a legbreak came back into the right-hander. Iverson took 21 wickets at 15.23 in that series before treading on a ball in the Adelaide Test. He hobbled through the fifth match and never played big cricket again. But his finger-flicking mystery bowling style immediately held great fascination for young Gleeson, whose slender long fingers were ideal for spinning a ball and especially well-suited to the folded-finger grip used by Iverson.Gleeson began his cricketing life as a wicketkeeper, and when he moved from Tamworth to Sydney in 1956, he kept in the lower grades for Western Suburbs. In secret, he trained alone, trying to master the finger flick. In 1958, at the age of 20, Gleeson returned to Tamworth and won selection for an overseas tour of Canada with the Emu Club. Frustrated that his bowlers couldnt make inroads in the opposition batting, he shed the pads and began to bowl his Iverson style. He first bowled in a serious match in Melbourne in 1964, turning out for the Australian Postal Institute. Gleesons deliveries mystified all and sundry that day, many beating the bat and the keeper.By the summer of 1965-66, Gleeson was the first-choice spinner for Gunnedah. Jack Chegwin, a great promoter of country cricket in New South Wales, took sides with current and ex-Test cricketers in them to the outlying areas, ever on the lookout for raw talent. Gleeson took wickets in one such match and delighted in getting the chance to bowl to Richie Benaud, one of his boyhood heroes.Benaud knew exciting talent when he saw it and he took a big interest in Gleeson, advising him to the Balmain Club, of which the secretary was Fred Bennett, who was destined to one day become chairman of the Australian Cricket Board.Gleeson got bags of wickets for Balmain, and in 1966-67 he made his debut for NSW, in Perth. He bowled 23 overs into the wind but found operating on the hard, true surface at the WACA less than great. Her took one wicket and was made to carry the drinks in the next match, in Adelaide.Sir Donald Bradman, then chairman of the Test selectors, met NSW captain Brian Booth on the eve of the match and asked him who was going to be 12th man.Johnny Gleeson, Booth said confidently.Well, thats the first mistake youve made this game. When NSW batted, Bradman asked Gleeson if he would like to accompany him to the nets and bowl to him. Bradman was 58 then. He wore neither pads nor gloves. Half a dozen balls from Gleeson were enough for him to say, Thanks John. By the end of the season I think youll be playing for Australia.Gleeson toured New Zealand with an Australian 2nd Xl in 1967, and by December that year he made his Test debut against India. He played in all four Tests, taking the last three wickets in Brisbane to help Australia win by 39 runs, and was a certain pick for the tour to England in 1968.He was dubbed Cho (Cricket Hours Only), because, apart from the nets or at the ground, he was never around. Maybe he wanted to maintain the mystery.Once, upon our arrival at the Waldorf Hotel, our London home away from home, there was captain Bill Lawry talking about playing bright cricket (so long as we win) and Cho fast asleep in the background, his head resting on Garth McKenzies broad right shoulder.I roomed with Cho on that 1968 tour, and one day asked how the publicity affected him. Doesnt worry me in the slightest, he said. Never read the newspapers. Next, I found him trying to close the lid on a suitcase overflowing with newspaper cuttings about one mystery finger-flick bowler John Gleeson.Lawry managed his fast and medium-paced attack brilliantly, but when it ccame to spin, though he could play it well, he didnt understand spinners. Japan World Cup Jerseys. . However, Lawry did like the way Gleeson bowled. Cho operated with a flat trajectory and was more at home on a green top than a slow, dusty turner, thus complementing the likes of the fast men McKenzie, Alan Connolly and Neil Hawke.Gleeson struggled to make an impact in India in 1969-70, apart from the Bombay Test, where the wicket had bounce and pace. He made an impact of a different sort on the last day of our match against South Zone in Bangalore a month later.Set 200 runs to get in two hours, we collapsed to the masterly spin of Erapalli Prasanna, who, by the fall of our sixth wicket, had the incredible figures of 6 for 9 off nine overs. Barnacle Bill Lawry was battling for a draw at the other end when Cho strolled to the wicket and spoke quietly to square-leg umpire BR Nagaraja Rao before heading to chat to the official at Prasannas end, NS Rishi. That done, Cho leaned over his bat, rejecting the umpires request to take guard, quipping, Not required, Mr Umpire. I took guard in Bombay weeks ago. While Lawry defended stoically, Gleeson either padded away or hit out.Stumps were drawn five minutes before the scheduled close because a section of the crowd began throwing stones.Lawry had batted for an unconquered 10, Cho was not out 18, and Australia at stumps were 90 for 8. There were back slaps all round for the two players, but Ian Chappell, Doug Walters and others were far more interested in what Cho had said to the umpires.Well, I said to the ump at square leg: Mr Umpire, if you give me out lbw, I will wrap this bat about your head. And I said the same thing to the other umpire. In my minds eye I can see Cho now. He moves in with a funny gait, a bit like a comical mix of Groucho Marx and Ronnie Corbett. Hes not a short man, but stays low. The delivery doesnt make a fizzing sound like Prasannas or Shane Warnes. It glides out of that folded-finger grip, always on target but devoid of what we call loop or shape.Unknowing batsmen were easily snared by Cho, who really was a master of deceit. Even if the ball went as straight as a gun barrel, his body language was a distraction for the unwary. His crowning glory was probably his bowling against the powerful South African batting line-up, headed by Graeme Pollock, Barry Richards, Eddie Barlow and Mike Procter, in 1969-70. Only Richards could play Gleeson effectively. When asked by others, including his team-mates, Richards would say: If you go after it and hit the ball just as it lands, it matters not which way the ball turns.Barlow tried that against Cho in the third Test, in Johannesburg, but didnt quite get to the pitch of the ball, and keeper Brian Taber stumped him yards short of his ground. In the four Tests, Gleeson bowled 255 overs and took 19 wickets at 38.94. He bowled a good deal better than his figures reflect. His bowling mystified many a good batsman, and Ray Illingworths 1970-71 Ashes squad was no exception. In Sydney, John Edrich waltzed up the pitch for a mid-wicket chat with his opening partner, Geoff Boycott.Hey Boycs, Edrich said joyfully, Ive just worked out Gleeson. I know for sure where each ones going.Oh, is that all, Ede? Boycott laughed, I worked Cho out two Tests ago, but dont tell those boogers in the dressing room.Gleeson was a great character. He had the dry, quirky sense of humour of the bush-based folk of the outback Australia of long ago. He spoke with passion about bowling, especially spin bowling, and the mystery of the finger-flicking style. Just as he loved the Iverson way, Cho delighted in Ajantha Mendis similar finger-flicking styleNow, sadly, Cho has gone. He proved to us all that some wicketkeepers can turn their hand successfully to spin bowling. So long, Cho. Fond memories of you and your cricket will stay in our hearts forever. According to a report from the Vancouver Province, the Lions are expected to replace former DC Rich Stubler with defensive backs coach Mark Washington. DETROIT -- It was hard to tell who was happier when Joshua Phegleys sixth-inning grand slam cleared the fence -- Phegley himself, or the pitcher who would benefit from those four runs. Phegleys drive gave Chris Sale some long-awaited offensive support, and Chicago went on to beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3 on Thursday in a game that included a bench-clearing altercation shortly after the White Sox took the lead. Sale was 0-6 in his previous seven starts despite an ERA of 3.10 over that span. With one swing, Phegley helped the left-hander end his unfortunate winless stretch. "That was awesome," Sale said. "Being in that situation and watching that ball go over the fence, that was very satisfying to say the least. What a game. We didnt put our heads down, didnt quit." Chicago trailed 3-1 when Phegley cleared the bases with a homer off Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez (7-6). Luke Putkonen came on and got one out before throwing a pitch behind Alexei Ramirez, who started toward the mound before being restrained. Benches and bullpens emptied, but the situation didnt escalate into any sort of fight. Putkonen was ejected, and Detroit manager Jim Leyland argued with umpires at length and was also tossed from the game. "I wasnt trying to hit anybody," Putkonen said. "Just threw a fastball inside, and it got away from me." Ramirez felt otherwise. "Obviously, that wasnt a pitch that was intended to go in the zone," he said through a translator. Sale (6-8) allowed three runs in 6 2-3 innings. Addison Reed pitched the ninth for his 23rd save in 27 chances. Detroits Miguel Cabrera hit his 30th homer of the year, a solo shot in the fifth that gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Prince Fielder was up next, and Sale threw a pitch high and inside to the Detroit slugger. Sale said he didnt mean to come close to hitting Fielder. "Just trying to rare back and throw it as hard as I can. Ive said it before -- theres a time and a place for that, and that wasnt the time or the place," Sale said. "Im not even trying to send a message. I wasnt even trying to back him off the plate, honestly. Ive got a lot of respect for Prince, the Detroit Tigers and the game of baseball." The White Sox rallied off Sanchez to take the lead, and then Putkonens pitch nearly hit Ramirez. Leyland looked fired up during the brouhaha that followed, and he twice came back out to argue with umpires. Leyland did not speak to reporters after the game. Plate umpire Chad Fairchild explained the decision to eject Putkonen. "He threw behind him and I deemed it intenttional," Fairchild said. Cheap Football Nigeria Jerseys. Fairchild did not view Sales pitch to Fielder the same way. "There was no reaction from Fielder. He said nothing. There was no reaction from anyone else," Fairchild said. "The only reaction I saw was from Sale, who made a motion like, Damn, it got away." Sale sounded upset with himself afterward. "Even when I threw it on the mound, I was kind of like, Ohhhhh, thats not good. So from the outside looking in, it doesnt look good at all. Like I said, I swear on everything I love, it was unintentional," he said. "Any time your teammates have something like that happen because of something you did, thats not fun. "Obviously, I wont sit here and say (Putkonens pitch) was intentional -- maybe it got away from him as well -- but you see something like that, and you kind of feel like an even bigger idiot, knowing that could have hurt him and done whatever, and that was because of me." With the crowd booing, Ramirez hit a single to right field and then left the game himself because of cramping in his right leg. Detroit centre fielder Austin Jackson couldnt come up with Jeff Keppingers sinking liner to start the sixth and was charged with an error. After a walk and a strikeout, Gordon Beckham singled and the 25-year-old Phegley followed with a grand slam in his 18th major league at-bat. "Especially for Sale, we needed to get him a win," Phegley said. "He threw well and he deserved it." Phegley is 4 for 20 now -- with three homers. Sale allowed 10 hits, walked two and struck out eight. He left in the seventh after allowing a double by Torii Hunter, and Matt Lindstrom came on and got Cabrera on a flyout. Alejandro De Aza made it 6-3 with a homer in the eighth off Phil Coke. De Aza also hit a single and a double. Ramirez opened the scoring in the first with an RBI double, but Matt Tuiasosopo put the Tigers ahead with a two-run homer in the second. Cabreras solo shot increased his RBI total to 94. Hes the first player to reach 30 homers and 90 RBIs before the All-Star break, according to STATS. A pair of Cincinnati Reds -- Tony Perez in 1970 and George Foster in 1977 -- made it to 29 and 90. Heres where the problem with reintroducing golf into the Olympic Games started: The powers that be who saw the benefits of the sports return after 112 years away -- from the innocence of growing the game globally to the self-indulgence of attempting to infuse the industry financially -- informally surveyed the games elite players about which format would best suit their tastes. Youth France Jerseys .Not the most creative bunch, the players answered that theyd like a 72-hole stroke-play format that sounds exactly like almost every other tournament on the schedule. Once it was approved by the IOC, there was no going back. But letting players pick such a common format meant that Olympic golf instantly felt less special than it should have. It felt like just another important tourney in a summer swimming with them, only this one would be contested at a brand-new, faraway venue with no money at stake. Go ahead and try to get your favorite multimillionaire to do a weeks worth of pro bono work and see how that goes over.Little by little, the players publicly recited the right words while privately questioning their own motives. Rickie Fowler might have said it best last year when asked about his Olympic goals: It would be a dream come true [that] I havent ever dreamed of.Unlike swimmers or runners or gymnasts -- athletes whod worked their entire lives to compete in the pinnacle of their sports -- golfers were not raised with this mentality. No, theyd worked to earn a green jacket or a Claret Jug someday, not a gold medal. All of which is why, in a game of honor between the ropes, these players were suddenly seeking loopholes.Use the excuse that its a crowded schedule and the Olympics are an unnecessary detour from their overall goals, and theyll be criticized for a me-first attitude. Explain that competing in another no-money event (in addition to the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup) is unfair, and theyll be ripped for greediness. Suggest that playing once per year for ones country should be enough, and theyll be castigated for a lack of patriotism. Contend that traveling to a country with an increasingly unstable government is a poor personal choice, and theyll be tsk-tsked for eschewing private resort accommodations. And then along came the Zika virus. It became the perfect get-out-of-jail-free card for professional golfers. Medical experts have insisted that there is minimal risk of contracting the virus in Rio de Janeiro during the Olympic fortnight, but its impossible to denounce a players decision to skip the tournament over concerns on the long-term welfare of his family. On Tuesday, Australias Jason Day became the latest elite-level player to withdraw his name from Olympic consideration (well, until a few hours later, when Irelands Shane Lowry also removed his hat from the ring). In a statement, Day listed his reason for pulling out as concern over transmission of Zika. For a player with a young family who might want to have more children in the future, thats a legitimate worry, no matter how low the odds of contracting the virus.Even those without young families are given a free pass. Northern Irelands Rory McIlroy withdrew last week, citing the same concern. It shouldnt matter that McIlroy isnt married and doesnt have children; he might want to begin that process in the near future, and nobody else should tell him to risk that for the chance at a gold medal. The truth, though, is that Zika has become an all-purpose excuse. Whether the virus is 99 percent of a players real reason for skipping the Games or whether that number is really much lower, it provides a handy cover for all concerns -- the unstable local government, the tightly packed schedule, the no-money tournament right in the middle of the summer.Dont believe that? Think of it this way: If there were a slight chance of contracting the virus in Augusta, Georgia, every April, the Masters wouldnt suffer from nearly as high a withdrawal rate as the Olympics.Even if golfs inclusion in the Olympics is novel, the fact that its best players are eschewing the festivities isnt. The same thing also happened back in 1904, the last time the sport featured in the Games. The entries for the Olympic championship were rather disappointing, particularly so in those from the East, wrote Crafts W. Higgins in The Golfers Magazine of the event played at Glen Echo Country Club, just outside of St. Louis. The known apathy of New Yorkers for any Western event should have been taken into consideration. As a result, the gold medal was captured by George S. Lyon, a 46-year-old Canadian whod been playing the game for less than a decade, had a gnarly case of hay fever and spent his working days as an insurance salesman. Though history wont repeat itself to that extent this summer, the known apathy of potential competitors should have been taken into consideration. It all stems from the format -- while it was hardly a death knell for Olympic golf, it was the catalyst that started the chain reaction that led to so many top players failing to buy into the concept. Now the dominoes are continuing to fall. With each withdrawal, the event loses more luster; the focus lingers more on those who arent competing than those who remain committed. The initial intention was that golfs return to the Olympics would shine a brighter spotlight on the worlds best players, helping to grow the game globally. So far, that isnt happening.Theres still time, though. The IOC is already committed to bringing golf back for the 2020 Summer Games in Japan. The first order of business for golfs powers that be should be making the competition feel more special. Maybe then, the dominoes will start to fall in the right direction.
